SMALL ISLAND. BIG IMPACT
Small Island, Big Impact: How Flinders Island takes on the UN Sustainable Development Goals!
Implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be challenging, but it is also critically important for movings towards a regenerative future for all. While some SDGs may seem more applicable to larger cities or nations, they can still be relevant and achievable in a small community like Flinders Island.
For example, the SDG goal of "No Poverty" can be addressed through equitable economic development and access to job opportunities. The SDG goal of "Zero Hunger" can be supported through initiatives like the Flinders Island Local Food Network and local food production. The SDG goal of "Clean Water and Sanitation" has been achieved through effective management of water resources on the Island such as the Henderson Dam Project. Flinders Island is leading the way with the SDG goal of "Affordable and Clean Energy" with our Hydro Tasmania renewable solar and wind power energy sources.
Other SDGs, such as "Climate Action" and "Life Below Water," are especially important for small island communities like Flinders Island, which are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and the degradation of marine ecosystems.
By identifying and prioritising SDGs that are relevant to Flinders Island, and developing strategies and initiatives to achieve them, we can create a healthier and resilient community. Even small actions can have a big impact when we work together towards a common goal.
