The Furneaux Futures Forum originally began as the Fert-Isle Forum in 2016, an initiative launched by Flinders Council to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship within the Flinders Island community.

The forum was designed to encourage new business ideas and provide a supportive environment for established businesses to mentor and assist budding entrepreneurs. Recognising the unique challenges and opportunities of island life, Flinders Council aimed to create a platform where local talent could thrive, fostering economic resilience and sustainable development.

From its inception, the Fert-Isle Forum focused on connecting individuals with resources, knowledge, and networks essential for business success. Over two days, workshops, seminars, and networking events were organised, covering topics ranging from business planning and marketing to sustainable practices and digital innovation. These gatherings not only provided practical skills but also facilitated the sharing of experiences and ideas, helping to build a robust entrepreneurial ecosystem on the island.

As the forum evolved, 2023 expanded its scope and was rebranded as the Furneaux Futures Forum - championing the theme of REGENERATION to better reflect its broader vision for the entire Furneaux Group of Islands. This rebranding marked a significant milestone, symbolising the forum’s commitment to regenerative development of all island communities. The new name encapsulated the forward-looking spirit of the initiative, emphasising a collective effort towards a regenerative and sustainable future.

In 2023, the Furneaux Futures Forum attracted a diverse range of participants, including aspiring entrepreneurs, small business owners, community leaders, and State Government Agencies. It served as a collaborative hub where innovative ideas could flourish, promoting local products and services, enhancing the visibility of island businesses, and sharing community-led, community driven initiatives.

A notable segment was the "Island Vision" presentations, where islanders shared their visions for the future in 15-minute presentations, fostering a collective sense of purpose and inspiring new initiatives.

The Furneaux Futures Forum demonstrates the transformative power of collective effort and innovative thinking, remaining dedicated to shaping a vibrant, thriving, and resilient future for the Furneaux Islands.
